The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is allocating an additional $3.6 million to fund a cash assistance program for certain categories of people to prepare for the winter period.
This is the second increase in the program’s budget by an international donor. Previously, its total budget was increased from $30 million to $37 million, which allowed it to reach approximately 71,000 households.
Due to the large number of applications from vulnerable families, UNHCR decided to increase the budget to $40.6 million. The new funding increase will help another 7,000 households in the frontline areas.
Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Iryna Vereshchuk thanked the international donor for supporting the population during the 2024/2025 heating season:
“I am sincerely grateful to UNHCR for their professional and humane approach. Thanks to the additional funding, we will be able to reach even more households in need of support this winter,” the official said.
The program provides one-time payments of UAH 21 thousand for the purchase of solid fuel for vulnerable households in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.
The relevant memorandum on support for frontline communities during the winter period 2024/2025 was signed on August 21, 2024 between the Ministry of Reintegration and UNHCR. The agreement was signed by Iryna Vereshchuk and UNHCR Representative in Ukraine Caroline Lindholm Billing.
