Another $84 million raised to pay compensation for damaged housing, – Oleksiy Kuleba

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved a decision to raise funds from the World Bank (WB) in the amount of $84 million to continue the Housing Opportunities for People’s Empowerment (HOPE) project.

“Today we have received a decision from the Government to attract additional financial support for one of our most important projects in the housing sector. Thanks to HOPE, Ukrainians receive compensation for damaged housing under the eRestoration programme. This is an effective support tool for our citizens, thanks to which tens of thousands of families have already received funds to repair their homes. We are constantly looking for new ways to supplement the compensation programmes and scale them up. We want people affected by the war to have the opportunity to repair their homes, buy new housing or rebuild as soon as possible. That is why I emphasise to our partners every time that the continuation of the compensation programme is our top priority. Thanks to additional funding from the World Bank, we will be able to pay compensation to more than 24,000 families. Out of the $84 million, $33 million will be used to cover small repairs for over 18,000 families, and $49.5 million will cover medium repairs for over 6,000 families. I thank you for your support and the Government for approving the decision,” commented Oleksiy Kuleba, Vice Prime Minister for Recovery, Minister of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine.

The HOPE project is being implemented in partnership with the World Bank. It includes compensation for damaged housing under eRestoration, as well as a component for the restoration of apartment buildings. It is currently the largest project in the housing sector.

More than 97,000 families have already been supported through the compensation programme for destroyed or damaged housing. More than 8,000 of them were able to purchase new housing.

A total of 138,000 applications have been submitted for damaged property and over 43,000 for destroyed property.

At the same time, 2,700 families have already bought new homes as part of IDP payments, and another 2,500 are in the process of looking for housing and will buy it in the near future.

We have also recently started paying compensation for rebuilding on our own land. This is an opportunity for Ukrainians who have completely lost their homes to build new housing on the site where they were destroyed or on a newly acquired one.
