How to help a child survive forced displacement during the war

The experts of the Diia.Bezbarernist platform shared their advice on how to support a child in such a situation. The materials were prepared within the framework of the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program “Are You Okay?”, an initiative of First Lady Olena Zelenska.

  1. Explain to your child why you decided to go and why it is important for your common safety.
  2. Be attentive to your child’s feelings. He or she may feel sad about losing contact with home and excited about new discoveries. These are all natural feelings. Share them with your child and do your best to create a sense of security for him or her.
  3. Don’t forget about the basics and the daily routine – both your child’s and your own. If possible, organize the day so that there is room for sleep, walking, time with other children, and learning.
  4. Do not treat moving as a pause in your life. Do your best to adapt to the new environment as quickly as possible. Look for a new social circle with your child, opportunities to play their favorite sport, etc.
  5. You can draw strength from memories of the past. But also be sure to talk to your child about the future, imagine it and share your dreams.
