More than 50 United Nations countries have joined a joint statement condemning Russia’s attempts to hold pseudo-elections in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
This was reported by the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the illegitimate attempts of the Russian Federation to organize presidential elections in the TOT within the internationally recognized territory of Ukraine. Holding elections on the territory of another UN member state without its consent is a blatant disregard for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Such elections have no legal force under international law,” the statement reads.
The statement was supported by Albania, Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liberia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Marshall Islands, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Palau, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Moldova, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uruguay and the European Union.
The UN countries also recalled the General Assembly resolution adopted at a special session on October 12, 2022. It recognized the illegal “referendums” held by the Russian Federation in September 2022 in certain districts of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine as invalid from the point of view of international law.
