Social housing programs for IDPs need to be scaled up

This issue was discussed at a regular meeting on the realization of housing rights for certain categories of IDPs chaired by Vice Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk. In particular, they reviewed the experience of the Mariupol City Council.

Currently, approximately 194,000 Mariupol residents are living in the government-controlled area. The program “I am Mariupol. Housing” program was launched.

The pilot project was the opening of social housing in Dnipro, where an existing dormitory was renovated. Modern living conditions were created for 35 families, and a point system for housing allocation was introduced. This ensures that people who need housing the most get it first. In particular, military families and low-income families.

To increase the level of trust on the part of international partners, a new transparent model of cooperation was introduced. According to this model, the municipality only provides the terms of reference and project design, and the rest is up to the contractor chosen by the donor.

There are plans to expand the program to other cities in Ukraine.

The Deputy Prime Minister thanked the mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boychenko, for his systematic work to ensure the housing rights of Mariupol residents in other regions of Ukraine.

The official also drew the attention of representatives of other temporarily evacuated communities to the need to follow the experience of the Mariupol community.
