550 Ukrainian schools in frontline areas to receive financial support from UNICEF

As part of the school feeding system reform initiated by First Lady Olena Zelenska, a joint project with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is being implemented to provide financial assistance to general secondary education institutions.

The project is coordinated by the Ministry of Reintegration to support educational institutions in the frontline areas. It is about providing funds to general secondary education institutions in the 2024/2025 academic year.

The project was discussed at a meeting chaired by Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk.

Schools selected according to the criteria set out in the Cabinet of Ministers’ Resolution No. 1114 of September 26, 2024, developed by the Ministry of Reintegration jointly with the Ministry of Education and Science, will receive one-time financial assistance from an international donor in the amount of UAH 290,500. The money will be used to repair and modernize school canteens and prepare for the winter period.

During the meeting, a representative of the Ministry of Education and Science reported on the results of the selection of institutions to be funded under this program. Thus, assistance will be provided to:

– 550 institutions in the frontline areas in Dnipropetrovs’k, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Kherson regions;

– 70 institutions in other regions where education is provided in full-time or mixed forms and at least 50 children from among internally displaced persons study;

– 80 schools that are the only institutions in the communities that provide full-time or mixed forms of education.

In total, financial support will cover 700 educational institutions. The Ministry of Education and Science is currently collecting and summarizing all the necessary information for the transfer of funds.

Iryna Vereshchuk called on local administrations to speed up the provision of the necessary information to the Ministry of Education and Science so that educational institutions receive assistance from the international partner in a timely manner.
