UNHCR increases funding for project to support frontline areas

An additional USD 7 million is being allocated by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to finance a program to provide certain categories of people with cash assistance for the winter period. This will bring the total budget of the program to USD 37 million.

The program provides for a one-time payment of UAH 21,000 for the purchase of solid household fuel for vulnerable households in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.

Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Iryna Vereshchuk thanked the international donor for supporting the population during the 2024/25 heating season.

“Iam grateful to UNHCR for the much-needed and timely assistance to the residents of the frontline territories. We plan to start making payments to the population by the end of October. More than 20 thousand households that have been identified should receive them. By increasing the funding for this program, we will be able to cover more households with assistance for the 2024/25 heating season,” said Iryna Vereshchuk during a briefing at the Eastern Ukrainian Forum of IDP Councils.

It is worth reminding that on August 21, 2024, the Ministry of Reintegration and UNHCR signed a memorandum on supporting frontline communities during the next winter period. The agreement was signed by Iryna Vereshchuk and UNHCR Representative in Ukraine Caroline Lindholm Billing.
