The EU will allocate additional 160 million euros to prepare Ukraine’s energy system for winter

This includes €100 million in proceeds from Russian assets frozen in Europe.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, wrote about this on her account on the social network X.

In addition, tomorrow, 20 September, von der Leyen will meet with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss strengthening EU support for Ukraine. She made the announcement during a briefing on supporting Ukraine’s energy security as the heating season approaches.

The President of the European Commission reminded that as a result of Russia’s systematic shelling of the Ukrainian energy system, approximately half of the total generation capacity was destroyed. This is comparable in scale to the power systems of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia combined.

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the European Union has allocated about 2 billion euros for energy support to Ukraine. Among other things, Ukraine received more than 10,000 generators and transformers through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
