The government’s priority is to support the families of prisoners of war

In Kyiv, the Central Officers’ House hosted a meeting of government officials with the families of prisoners of war. The event was chaired by Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Iryna Vereshchuk.

Representatives of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the Joint Center for the Coordination of the Search and Release of Prisoners of War at the Security Service of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff, the Armed Forces, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Information Bureau (NIB), the Ministry of Reintegration, MP Olha Vasylevska-Smagliuk, as well as representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and others answered the questions of the relatives of the defenders.

The following issues were discussed at the meeting:

– interaction of state bodies on the return of prisoners of war;

– work of algorithms of interaction between the registers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the NIB;

– communication of state authorities with the families of persons held captive by the aggressor state;

– the work of the ICRC, including visits to places of detention of prisoners of war;

– compilation of lists of prisoners for exchange;

– providing preferential treatment to families of persons held captive by the aggressor state;

– rehabilitation of persons returned from captivity, etc.

During the discussion, it was reminded that the Commission on establishing the fact of deprivation of personal freedom as a result of armed aggression against Ukraine continues to work under the Ministry of Reintegration. It establishes the fact of captivity of military and civilians, including those already released from captivity.

After the Commission establishes the fact of deprivation of personal liberty, the Ministry of Reintegration pays a one-time state financial assistance in the amount of 100 thousand hryvnias to persons released from captivity.

The Ministry also pays annual state aid in the amount of 100 thousand hryvnias for each year of captivity to former prisoners of war or family members of those who are still in captivity.

We emphasize that information about a person being taken prisoner by the enemy must be reported exclusively to the authorized state bodies.
